Cleaning Experts Tested top Best ten Dishwashers for 2022

When it’s running properly, your dishwasher is a workhorse in the kitchen that you scarcely notice. You fill it up with filthy dishes, and it cleans them up in no time. When your dishwasher isn’t working properly, though, pre-washing (and re-washing!) and drying dishes, glasses, cookware, and other items becomes a daily pain. When you’re conducting maintenance on your dishwasher, you know it’s time to replace it.

We evaluate new dishwashers and countertop dishwashers as they hit the market at the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab to see which ones work best. Every machine is put through its paces in the same way, and our tests are based on industry-standard procedures for more accurate findings. It took us four months (and over 374 hours) to evaluate 17 dishwashers in our most recent test.

During our tests, we assess how easy each dishwasher is to use, load, and programme, as well as the capacity of all racks and trays. We consistently dirty cookware and plates, glasses and flatware before evaluating the cleaning performance of multiple cycles to see how effectively each machine removes baked-on, dried-on, burned-on mac and cheese, hamburger, oats, egg yolk, milk, and more.

We use the same detergent in each machine and follow the manufacturer’s loading instructions to wash our soiled cookware, plates, cups, glasses, and flatware on numerous cycles. After cleaning, we inspect and score each item for any remaining bits of filth, and we use a special light box to check the glasses for spots and residual film. We also evaluate and rank each appliance based on its energy efficiency, sound, and ease of loading, unloading, and programming. The dishwashers that performed best in our lab, or improved versions of models we’ve previously evaluated, are listed below. Here are the dishwashers we think are the most dependable:

In GH Cleaning Lab testing, Frigidaire appliances are consistently strong performers and easy to use, and this Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher, like others we’ve highlighted, is a deal. You get a machine that not only cleans and dries effectively, but also has a lot of high-end accessories for a very low price. The control panel is concealed for a sleek appearance, is very clear and simple to operate, and contains a “favourite cycle” feature that, once set, chooses your chosen cycle and choices with just one click. Do you only have a few things? For increased energy efficiency, this dishwasher allows you to wash half loads in either the top or bottom racks.

A fingerprint-resistant stainless steel front, cushioned stemware holders, adjustable water pressure for the kind and dirt of the load, an NSF-certified sanitise option, and a light beam that projected on the floor to let you know when the cycle is over are all nice features at this price. The lack of a top-tier flatware and cutlery tray, as well as the plastic (rather than stainless steel) interior tub, make this machine affordable. Neither of these features hampered cleaning in our tests.

BEST OVERALL DISHWASHER

Smart Dishwasher with AutoDos
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 38 dBA
  • Energy Star Certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Excellent cleaning performance
  • Interior LED light
REASONS TO AVOID

This Miele dishwasher, with its top-hidden controls, is not only sleek and stunning to look at, but also a great cleaning workhorse with innovative features that make it simple to use. The AutoDos system uses Miele’s PowerDisk, which dispenses the perfect quantity of cleaning powder for the cycle and lasts up to 20 washes, eliminating the need to remember to add cleaner each time. With adjustable racks and shelves, fold-down tines, and cushioned stemware handles, the dishwasher is a breeze to fill. The top 3D cutlery tray not only prevents flatware from nesting for easier cleaning, but it’s also deep enough to hold tiny bowls and ramekins, and it glides from side to side to provide tall stemware on the rack below more headroom.

In just an hour, the QuickIntenseWash cycle can clean a very dirty load. The control panel is straightforward and simple to use. All of these elements contribute to energy savings as well: This Miele dishwasher includes an EcoStart function that allows you to set the dishwasher to run when utility rates are at their lowest, as well as an EcoTech Heat Exchanger that absorbs heat from the dishwasher and transfers it to the incoming water, preventing it from being wasted. The dishwasher is also clever. With the Miele app, it can be controlled remotely. It’s easy to see why it received the Good Housekeeping Seal.

BEST DISHWASHER FOR AVID HOME COOKS

Built-In Dishwasher with Stainless Steel Tub
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 47 dBA
  • Energy Star Certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Stainless steel interior
  • Adjustable third rack
  • Easy to program
REASONS TO AVOID
  • No interior light

This KitchenAid has a large third rack that can be adjusted to fit glasses and bowls, as well as a removable utensil tray for cooking tools, which, when combined with the adjustable middle rack that can accommodate tall items like platters or a stand mixer bowl, makes it a great choice for frequent home cooks. Its Clean Water Wash System pumps clean water to all three racks, and its silent operation allows you to use it whenever you choose – or programme it to start later to meet your schedule or save money on power bills.

With only five main cycles and six options, this dishwasher is simple to set and excellent for busy cooks on the go. Additionally, we appreciate the dry choices for better results on plastics and spot-free glasses. The top controls add to the clean design, and the stainless steel or black finishes both resist smudges and fingerprints and can be cleaned with a moist soft cloth.

BEST SMART DISHWASHER

Smart Dishwasher with QuadWash and TrueSteam
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 42 dBA
  • Energy Star Certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Uses steam to improve cleaning performance
  • Comes in black stainless and regular stainless
REASONS TO AVOID
  • May not hold as much as others

This unique device contains four lower spray arms (compared to normal versions, which only have two, hence the name QuadWash) that spin and rotate with the water pressure, directing water into the corners to wash every inch of every dish. For improved cleaning of crusty, baked-on dirt and to help reduce water spots, LG’s TrueSteam technology heats the tub with steam during the pre-wash and main wash phases of the cycle. Alternatively, use it to gently clean a load of delicate crystal that needs to be refreshed. This type is simple to load and features a top tier tray as well as a separate flatware basket in the bottom rack. We also enjoy that it contains a heating element for faster drying.

The LG Smart Diagnosis app allows you to download more cycles to the machine (!) and is designed to troubleshoot any faults, such as a dishwasher that won’t start. When the cycle is over, it will notify you via your smartphone, Alexa, or Google Assistant. LG dishwashers perform so well in our testing that we use the same model in our Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen and put it through its paces.

BEST DISHWASHER FOR DRYING

800 Series Dishwasher with CrystalDry
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 42 dBA
  • Energy Star Certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Come in black stainless and regular stainless steel
  • Good drying performance, even on plastics
  • Has a third tier rack and a flatware basket
REASONS TO AVOID
  • Stainless steel version is not fingerprint resistant

If your load includes a lot of plastic storage containers, drink bottles, and measurement cups, this Bosch dishwasher is the answer to your drying demands. Many dishwashers might leave plastics damp, requiring you to dry them by hand before storing them, but not the Bosch. It works by converting damp air in the dishwasher at the conclusion of the cycle into dry heat that is pushed back into the dishwasher for better drying. The minerals are refreshed by a tiny heating element, so they are always ready for the next load and never need to be replaced. This option saves electricity and adds only 30 minutes to the wash cycle.

It cleans effectively, accepts large loads, and is quite quiet, much like all of the Bosch dishwashers we’ve tested. A third rack that is extra deep to hold small bowls, lids, and wide utensils like whisks, a red light that shines on the floor to let you know the appliance is running (trust us, you won’t hear it), and a small compartment on the middle rack to catch detergent tablets as they are dispensed for better dissolving

BEST DISHWASHER FOR BIG MESSES

Elite Dishwasher with Active Finish
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 44 dBA
  • Energy Star Certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Fingerprint resistant front
  • Targeted jets for cleaning baked-on soils
  • Offers top- or bottom-only wash options
REASONS TO AVOID
  • May not hold as much as others

BEST COMPACT DISHWASHER

Compact Countertop Dishwasher
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 16.86 × 16.75 × 18.05 inch countertop dishwasher
  • Noise level: 50 dBA
  • Energy star-certified: No
REASONS TO BUY
  • Can be used on countertops
  • Doesn’t take up much space
REASONS TO AVOID
  • Hoses may not fit all faucet sizes and adapter may be needed

This countertop marvel is perfect for those who don’t have enough space for a full-sized dishwasher or just use a few dishes. The tiny dishwasher measures 16.86 x 16.75 x 18.05 inches and can accommodate up to four place settings, making it ideal for small residences. For a 360o washing, the dishwasher has both bottom and top spraying.

Each machine has two 61-inch hoses, one for draining straight into the sink and the other for filling the built-in water tank, which can store up to three gallons of water. It has four wash cycles that are automatically followed by a 60-minute dry cycle, as well as a fruit cycle that is used to clean produce using the accompanying basket. This model is great for new parents who need to clean and sanitise a lot of bottles and other baby goods.Detergent tablets are recommended for use only in long-cycle washing, however liquid powder and pod detergents can also be used! Our tester appreciated it for its performance, especially the fruit cycle, and said that loading it became a pleasant pastime for them and their children, who found the dishwasher fascinating to watch in operation.

BEST FILTERING DISHWASHER

Top Control Dishwasher
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 44 dBA
  • Energy Star Certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Dual power filtration
  • Fingerprint resistant stainless steel
REASONS TO AVOID
  • Accumulated food waste in the bottom of dishwasher can cause noise

Maytag’s fingerprint-resistant stainless steel elegance is built to last. The top-control dishwasher has a steam sanitise option that kills germs found in food, and the dual power filtration system, according to the manufacturer, gets rid of stuck-on foods, eliminating the need for a long soak or pre-rinse. In our tests, it performed a wonderful job grinding up and filtering out food particles, although we did notice that when large bits of food got trapped, it added a touch of noise to an otherwise silent cycle.

This dishwasher not only has a stainless steel silverware bin, but the third level rack is also great for flatware and fits cups and bowls. The Maytag also has a delayed start option, which is great for running the dishwasher overnight when no one is home or when utility prices are reduced. When the machine is operating or the cycle is complete, an indicator light on the control panel is visible.

BEST LARGE CAPACITY DISHWASHER

Top Control Built-In Dishwasher
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 45 dBA
  • Energy star-certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Half-load setting
  • Quiet operation
REASONS TO AVOID
  • Stainless steel version is not fingerprint resistant

This stainless steel dishwasher not only looks great, but it also works well. Dishwashers can be noisy, but the Sharp top control dishwasher is silent, according to the manufacturer. The washer can handle 14 place settings or an entire family’s worth of dishes, and the LED internal light should make packing a breeze. We like that it contains a utensil holder as well as an adjustable third rack — perfect for flatware — and that the controls are hidden, adding to the streamlined appearance.

The washer’s six cycles and 14 settings allow you to clean dishes in a number of ways, and the Electricity Star-certified washer offers a half load option that can be used on any rack and helps save water and energy. The power wash mode cleans dishes with stuck-on meals and stains more thoroughly, while the soil sensor setting optimises cleaning settings for a superior clean. It’s exciting to see a new appliance from a well-known electronics company.

BEST DISHWASHER FOR BULKY ITEMS

Smart Dishwasher with Hidden Controls
SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Size: 24-inch Built-in dishwasher
  • Noise level: 39 dBA
  • Energy star-certified: Yes
REASONS TO BUY
  • Wide spaces between tines for deeper plates
  • Has special jets for cleaning deep items
  • Has a hard-food disposer for grinding tough items, like pits
REASONS TO AVOID
  • May not hold a much as others

This is an improved version of the previous GE model we reviewed, and it has all of the same amazing features as the prior model, plus a few more. It still boasts revolutionary bottle jets for cleaning the interiors of hard-to-reach water bottles, baby bottles, vases, and other items. Special deep clean silverware jets now push blasts of water up into the flatware basket for improved removal of stuck-on food, and chunky flatware fits right in thanks to the basket’s big apertures.

It’s one of the quietest dishwashers we’ve tested, at 39 dB. This model has stainless steel inside and out (it’s fingerprint-resistant! ), steam for better and gentler cleaning, a 12-hour delay wash option, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a bottom flatware basket that splits for faster loading (in addition to the third tier tray).

This new model comes with an app that lets you check cycle status, check rinse aid levels, and automatically replenish detergent from your phone. One feature we like about GE is that the tines on the lower rack are placed far enough apart to accept curved and deep plates that other machines in our testing couldn’t handle.

What to consider before you buy a new dishwasher

Fortunately, picking a new dishwasher to purchase is not as difficult as it might be with other equipment. Almost all machines are 24 inches wide and will fit in the area where your present one is now. Here are some other things to bear in mind:

✔️ Dishwasher cycles:When purchasing a new dishwasher, you’ll want the following features (along with maybe additional bells and whistles):

  • Soil sensors:Because all modern dishwashers contain dirt sensors, you’ll notice “Auto” and “Smart Wash” cycles. The duration of the cycle and the amount of water that enters into it are adjusted in these cycles to better fit the soil level of your loads. The cycle is shorter and uses less water for a lightly dirty load. If the dishwasher detects a particularly unclean load, it increases the time and water to provide a thorough clean. To achieve the greatest cleaning, we recommend that you use these sensor cycles instead of “normal.”
  • Dishwasher-safe pots and pans should be heavy duty.
  • When you don’t have enough stuff to run a full load, a quick wash or rinse alone is great.
  • Dry boosting produces drier, spot-free results, particularly on glass and plastic.
  • If you want to run the dishwasher during off-peak energy hours or in the middle of the night when your household’s water usage is minimal, delay start is a fantastic option.
  • A sanitising cycle eliminates bacteria over time, while a high-heat rinse kills bacteria quickly (ideal for use after someone gets a cold in the house).
  • For delicate or hand-washed objects, the china or delicate cycles are preferable.
  • Washes with only a few items in the top or bottom rack are called half load cycles.

✔️ Dishwasher racks:Not all dishwasher racks (a.k.a. where you put your dirty dishes) are made equal, as you’ll soon discover. Here are some more features to think about:

  • Mobility: When you’re out shopping, test the racks by sliding them in and out to see if they’re robust and roll smoothly, as well as how they adapt.
  • Spacing:Some shelves have extremely close tine spacing, while others offer sufficient space for thick or curved plates. Consider if they’ll fit the dishes you use the most: if you have a platter or plate you want to be sure fits in a new dishwasher, bring it with you!
  • Features:Folding shelves are ideal for double stacking cups and tiny serving dishes, while folding tines allow large bowls and cookware to be stored. If you wash a lot of wine glasses, stemware holders are a lifesaver, and a third-tier flatware or utensil shelf means you can skip the flatware basket on the lower rack for more space down below.

✔️ Dishwasher tub:Stainless steel and plastic are the two most common materials used inside dishwashers. Both are sturdy and serviceable, but stainless steel gets our pick. Stainless steel tubs, which were once exclusively found on the most costly machines, are now found on almost all machines except the most basic. Stainless steel maintains heat, is easy to clean, and is indestructible. We believe the increased cost is justified.

✔️ Dishwasher door:This is entirely a personal preference decision. When you go shopping, you’ll notice the following:

  • Controls may be exposed so you can check the state of the cycle and the remaining time at a glance, or concealed for a more streamlined design.
  • Front-handle handles are more likely to match your other kitchen appliances, such as your refrigerator or stove. Recessed handles are concealed and do not intrude into the cooking area.
  • The majority of door panels are pre-finished with stainless steel, black, or other basic panels, but high-end versions may also allow bespoke panels to match your kitchen cabinets for a seamless aesthetic.
  • Stainless steel is still the most popular finish, but many manufacturers are now providing black stainless, matte black, white, or bronze tones to give warmth and diversity. If you want to try something new, consider how it will fit in with the rest of your kitchen appliances. And, regardless of which option you choose, be sure to inquire about fingerprint resistance on the door panel. It’s available from a variety of companies, and trust us when we say you’ll be pleased you purchased it.

✔️ Energy efficiency:All dishwashers have Energy Guide labels on them, so you can compare models to see how much energy they consume and how much they’ll cost you to run each year. The amount of energy used in a dishwasher is nearly completely determined by the amount of water used. It burns less energy the less water it uses.

✔️ Loudness:Dishwashers are one of the rare appliances where the decibel level of the model is disclosed (if you can’t find it in-store, visit the manufacturer’s website). The quietest versions have a decibel level of roughly 40 dB or below.
